“Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding, giving honor to the wife, as the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers be not hindered.” 1 Peter 3:7
The Bible has always taught that the husband has the responsibility in the family to model REAL love. The husband is to “love his wife as Christ loves the church.” Here the Apostle Peter shares some practical pointers in loving our wives.
First, we are to dwell (live with; be around; spend time with) with our wives with understanding. No man can honestly say that he “understands” women, he can, however, live with understanding. The Apostle is teaching us that we, as husbands, have the responsibility of being the understanding leader of the home. Husbands are not the dictator, the Lord of the Manor, or King of the Hill, we are the loving, understanding, follower of Christ.
Second, as husbands we are to “give honor” to our wives. Women are not stepstools nor servants; they are to be treated with honor and respect. They are a highly valued part of the family. They are weaker in physical statue and strength, but none the less important. Wives are believers as well and children of God’s grace just as we are. When you honor your wife, you honor the Lord.
When a husband is out of fellowship with his wife, he is out of fellowship with the Lord. You cannot mistreat, disrespect, or take for granted your wife and still be in right relationship with the Lord. Husbands have a role model to follow and His name is Jesus.
