“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.” 1 Peter 5:8-9
In Africa when you are on a safari, you are always mindful that there are lions around. As you look at a large herd of impalas or bush bucks you learn to watch them, you look where they look. You avoid what they avoid. Why? Because they have learned to watch out for the lion. Its an amazing thing to see 300 impalas all throw their heads up at the same time and move away at the same time. They know the lion is NOT their friend. They know not to let him get to close. They know that he will attack without mercy and kill as many as he can.
Beloved, the devil is just like that. You can not make friends with the devil and expect to make it out alive. The devil will seek to destroy you at the most opportune time. Many a foolish person has fallen into the trap of thinking that they can have a “little” fun, then I’ll leave “when I want to leave.” The truth of the matter is when the devil decides to pounce its often too late.
The Apostle Peter urges us to be “vigilant,” always watching. Be prepared to resist the devil because the devil IS OUT TO DESTROY YOU. You can’t make peace with him and you can’t change his mind. You must resist him and remain steadfast in the faith. The Lord Jesus is our strength and shield. He is who we trust. Only Jesus has the words of eternal life. So be on your guard and be aware.
