“I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom:” II Timothy 4:1
Paul is charging Timothy with his duty to follow God’s calling in his life. To emphasize the seriousness and the authority that is placed upon him, Paul points out his authority given to him by God alone in Jesus Christ.
There are times when just knowing who was giving the command makes us even more diligent to follow without question. We often look at certain positions of people and give them the respect because of “who” they are in life.
Paul acknowledges that it is God who will hold us accountable for our actions and how well we do what He has called us to do with our lives. Paul is holding God the Father and God the Son as witnesses to the charge placed on Timothy’s life.
I’m reminded of how God holds all of us accountable for what we pledge or vow to do for Him. In Ecclesiastes 5:4-6 it says, “When you make a vow to God, do not be late in paying it; for He takes no delight in fools. Pay what you vow! It is better that you should not vow than that you should vow and not pay. Do not let your speech cause you to sin and do not say in the presence of the messenger of God that it was a mistake. Why should God be angry on account of your voice and destroy the work of your hands?”
We are to never make light of what God has called us to do. Even like Jonah, we often try to find a way out of doing what God calls us to do then we sometimes find ourselves in the belly of a whale! Follow God closely!
God’s calling is on everyone’s life, not just ministers. There is a plan and a purpose for each one of us. We must diligently find out what God’s plan is for us and follow it. God wants us to be faithful in all things, especially in carrying out His will for our lives… Peace be with you!
