“Have mercy upon me, O God, according to Your lovingkindness; According to the multitude of Your tender mercies, Blot out my transgressions.” Psalm 51:1
The Bible teaches us that we are ALL sinners. Everyone is guilty of breaking God’s law. King David was also a sinner. Here in Psalm 51 the Prophet Nathan had just called King David on his sin of adultery with Bathsheba, and the role he played in the murder of her husband. There was no doubt of David’s guilt.
Notice that David immediately asked for MERCY. David did not ask for JUSTICE. Beloved, no sinner wants justice. David knew that he was guilty. He knew that he fully deserved punishment. He asked for mercy.
The MERCY that he asked for was not based on anything that he had done. No mention of the victory over Goliath, no mention of sparing King Saul, no mention of him being the King of Israel. He asked for mercy based on the nature of God. David knew that the Lord was gracious and long-suffering. David asked for mercy based on the Lord’s lovingkindness (Love in action). He mentions the “multitude” of times that the Lord has shown mercy.
Only after asking for mercy, and realizing God’s nature, dose David ask that his transgression be blotted out. Beloved, we should learn a lesson from King David. We are sinners, we do not want justice BUT mercy. We seek the LORD’s grace and forgiveness. Our trust is in His lovingkindness.
