“Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Make me hear joy and gladness, That the bones You have broken may rejoice.” Psalm 51:7-8

In biblical times one of the worst diseases was leprosy. It was a slow moving infectious disease that caused the nerve endings to die. Eventually a person would lose fingers, toes, then arms and legs, and finally death. People were so afraid of catching it that they pushed people out of the community who contracted the disease. The house of the leper had to be completely scrubbed with “hyssop” before it could be used again. In the Old Testament hyssop was also used in the ceremonial cleansing of a person who had come in contact with a dead body.

David here is calling on the LORD to completely cleanse him from the contamination of his sin. To make him useable again. David wanted to be free from the very stain of sin.

Notice that David mentions that sin had caused pain and weakness like broken bones. He knew that ONLY the could make those broken bones strong again. Strong enough that they would rejoice.

Beloved, every person who has repented of their sins and asked the Lord Jesus to forgive them has been washed by the blood of Jesus. We are CLEAN. Let us rejoice. Let’s rejoice with others who have also been cleansed by the blood of Jesus.
