“For You do not desire sacrifice, or else I would give it; You do not delight in burnt offering. The sacrifice of God are a broken spirit, A broken and contrite heart - These, O God, You will not despise.” Psalm 51:16-17

Many people over the centuries have tried to earn their way into heaven. They believe that if they “do” more good things than bad things they will get into heaven. Others believe that they can “do” acts of service to make up for all the wrong that they have done. Still others believe that they can so “penitence” and be saved. All of these “self-sacrificing” ways lead to the sample place: hell.

David understood that it was not a physical act of service or sacrifice that God desires. God desires repentance of sin that is evident by a brokenness over personal sin. If there is no brokenness over sin then there is not true repentance.

David had learned thru experience that sin separates you from the LORD. He knew that when you are out of fellowship with the Lord, He will not hear your prayers. Psalm 66:18 states: ”If I regard iniquity in my heart, the LORD will not hear.”

Repentance changes everything. The broken and contrite person who calls out to the LORD in repentance will be heard. Beloved, we need to practice repentance as often as we realize that there is sin in our lives. We need to draw near to God and He will draw near to us. We need to share with others how repentance leads to forgiveness and salvation. Let us share the Good News.
