October 8, 2020 - That Sheep Sure is Oily...

…Thou anointest the my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Psalm 23:5b

Quick internet research shows what David was talking about when he wrote these words.

As a shepherd, he would periodically anoint the sheep with oil in an effort to keep the critters out of the wool of the sheep. If parasites were to get in there and be able to “set up a residence“ it would be very bad for the sheep. It could eventually kill them with whatever infection or disease they might bring. The shepherd would cover the sheep diligently. Many times the oils had a fragrance. This would also be soothing to the sheep and annoying to the bugs. Certain oils were also often used to treat wounds and bring healing to injuries. The cup runs over because the shepherd is not going to take any chances of leaving the sheep exposed in anyway.

When we align this with remembering the story of Jesus when He was at the house visiting and the woman came in and anointed his feet with her tears and the expensive oil wiping it with her hair, we learn that the tradition of anointing a visitor with oil is also a way to honor them and show value to them (the visitor).

The practice of using “oils” in our modern day life, is very much preserved. Oils are very important to a lot of people. Check out what the internet says about the essential oil industry worldwide: The market value of essential oils worldwide is expected to grow from around 17 billion U.S. dollars in 2017 to about 27 billion dollars by 2022. Europe accounts for the largest share of the global essential oils market, with the Asia Pacific region and North America tying for second place.

Yes, that's billion with a B - Astounding!

David includes this mention of "oiling" in his psalm of praise because he knows what an important part of the shepherd and sheep‘s life anointing oil is. He knows how important the correct oil is. David is using this practice in the life of a shepherd to express praise to the Lord for His extravagant and lavish love and protection.

The Shepherd loves the sheep and spares no expense in His outpouring on His flock.

- Thank you Lord for your extravagant love and protection.

- Thank you Lord for being diligent to not leave us unprotected, even in a small way.
