“Finally, all of you be of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be courteous; not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary blessing, knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing.”
1 Peter 3:8-9
As Christians we are encouraged to love others. The Apostle Peter here reminds us that we should all be like minded in loving one another as members of the family of God. Notice that he gives practical examples of what we are to do.
We are to be compassionate towards one another. That means we need to consider the other persons feelings when we respond. It doesn’t mean we have to agree with them, but we should still show love to them. We are to love like brothers. Being a brother, I can tell you that Mark and I don’t agree, but we will always be brothers. The troubles in life will never change the family relationship that we share.
We are to be tenderhearted and courteous to each other. We do this best when we have mutual love and respect for each other and when we follow the principles in Scripture and the example of Jesus. Truth is Truth. We need not ever resort to name calling and attacking another person.
Beloved, as Christians we have the responsibility to stand-up for our convictions. We don not, however, have the right to be rude while doing it. We should always seek to model the love of Jesus.
