“Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity. Till I come, give attention to reading to exhortation, to doctrine.” 1 Timothy 4:12-13
When we repent of our sins and accept Christ as our Savior and Lord, everything changes. We are no longer bound to the works of the flesh and the deeds of darkness. That is not to stay that we instantly become perfect. We will make mistakes, but that should be exception and not the rule. We are to grow in grace daily.
Paul stressed the importance of setting a good example for others to follow in several key areas of life. Notice he starts with the way we talk. The believer should have a different vocabulary that the lost world. We should be positive and not negative. Christ in us is the “Hope of Glory.” We are to be role models for others to emulate. As believers, our conduct, our love, our faith and our purity should give a moral picture for others to see and understand. Our “spirit” should be more like that of our Lord Jesus.
With the backdrop of a converted life, Paul now turns his attention to what should be done when the congregation meets. He tells Timothy to read the Word of God. Beloved, we need to know the Word of God to be able to obey it. We need to be exhorted in the Word, or built up. We need to be taught sound biblical doctrine, to keep us growing in our relationship with the Lord. It’s God plan for spiritual growth
