“Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving;” Colossians 4:2
We live in a fast-paced society. Everyone is traveling more and farther than we used to travel. We have learned to master the short cuts. We are developing new words almost every day, like hashtag, and emoji. We email and text rather than writing letters. Even in texting there are short cuts: lol=laugh out loud, ttyl=talk to you later, gtg=got to go. We are better connected but we don’t communicate as well.
The Apostle Paul, encouraged believers to “continue in earnestly in prayer.” We are never going to be able commune with God in an abbreviated and flippant way. We are to earnestly or diligently seek the Lord. It takes time to pour out your heart before God. Charles Wesley once commented that one of his deepest sorrows was the because of his advanced years he could only spend four hours a day on his knees in prayer. I wonder what this country and world would look like if every Christian would spend four hours a day on our knees in prayer.
Paul also encouraged believer to be vigilant, which means watchful. We are to look for things that we need to pray about. We are to intercede for those around us. We are to talk to Lord about the needs.
Finally, we are to pray with the attitude of gratitude. We are to be thankful for how the Lord has already answered prayers in the past. Thank Him for His care and concern. Thank Him that He will answer the prayer you are praying today. We have so much to be thankful for.
