“Is this not the carpenter, the Son of Mary, and brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And are not His sisters here with us?” And they were offended at Him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own country, among his own relatives , and his own house.” Mark 6:3-4
Jesus grew up in the town of Nazareth. The people there were very familiar with Him. Notice they called Him “the carpenter.” We are not sure when Joseph died, but it was sometime after Jesus turned twelve. He didn’t enter the ministry until He was thirty. It is clear from this passage and others that Jesus worked as the town carpenter. No doubt many there had used Jesus in this capacity.
Note too that they were familiar with His entire family, they even called them by name. Yes, Joseph and Mary had children after Jesus was born. Jesus was a part of their community. His childhood friends were there. His brother and possible their wives were there. His sisters and possibly their husbands were there. Jesus was no stranger.
The problem was that they could not see Jesus any other way than the boy who grew up there. They could not see the Messiah because they had already labeled Him “the carpenter.”
Beloved, we too have a hard time seeing the change in people. We are NOT defined by our past. We are NEW Creatures in Christ.
