“And Jesus, when He came out, saw a great multitude and was moved with compassion for them, because they were like sheep not having a shepherd. So He began to teach them many things.” Mark 6:34
As Jesus began to travel from village to village teaching and preaching, His popularity increased. People would hear that He was in a nearby by village and would rush to hear Him.
One morning when Jesus awoke and went outside He saw a multitude of people already gathering. Thousands of people were coming from the surrounding area. Some had already heard Jesus but they were hungry for more. It must have been an impressive sight.
Notice that Jesus had “compassion” for them. The word used here means to have sympathy for, and be moved toward an action, namely compassion. Jesus wasn’t moved to compassion because they had walked a great distance, though some of them had He was moved to compassion because they had no shepherd. They had no one leading them toward the Father.
His compassion moved Him to TEACH them. Beloved, sharing the Gospel with someone is wonderful, but teaching them to grow closer to the Lord is just as important. Jesus knew the Scripture, “My people die because a lack of knowledge. Too often people focus on the miracle at the end of the day, (the feeding of the 5,000) that they miss the most important lesson of the day.
