“For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?” Mark 8:36-37
Everyday on my way to church, or running errands, I see people from all walks of life. I see rich and poor and everything in between. Though they are all different they all seem to be trying to make it in life. The rich want to be richer. The poor are just trying to survive. The reality is they both want MORE.
Sadly, many people have turned to violence in their quest to gain more. They rob and steal to get something that they want. They lose their family and friends with drug addictions, as they search for their next high.
Jesus here tells the simple truth: your is more valuable than anything. Look again at what Jesus said. “What will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his soul?” Imagine that you “got” everything you want, money, land, power, prestige and anything else. What if you lived to be 100 years old. You might think that was wonderful. But what about the day AFTER you die. You would have NONE of those “things.” You would also have no relationship with Jesus because you spent your life seeking your own desires.
After a mere 100 years of pleasures on earth, the person without Christ will be tormented for all eternity. In a place where the flame is not quenched and the worms don’t die. What would you give then to escape?
