“But reject profane and old wives’ fables, and exercise yourself toward godliness. For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come.” 1 Timothy 4:7-8
I grew up watching the “Jack LaLanne Show” in the summertime. He was probably the “father” of the American fitness culture. He would do some outlandish stunts to show the importance of remaining physically fit. For example: in 1976, to celebrate the US Bicentennial, he swam from Alcatraz Island to Fisherman’s Wharf (1.2 miles) while being handcuffed and shackled—while towing 13 boats (symbolizing the 13 colonies) with 76 people on board. He was 62 years old at the time. Millions of people were encouraged to stay physical fit by watching Jack.
Beloved, Paul reminds us that staying physically fit is good but being spiritually fit is better. Jack LaLanne died at the age of 96. He worked out the day before he died. His physical body gave out.
Paul reminds Timothy godliness helps everything. A godly person in blessed both in this life and the life to come. There are no short-cuts for getting into physical shape, just like there are no short cuts in getting into spiritual shape. We must be working out with the Word of God every day. We must spend time kneeling in prayer every day. We must spend time worshipping the Lord alone and with other believers. We must spend time witnessing to the lost and sharing the Love of Christ we everyone we come in contact with. Amen!
