“Likewise, their wives must be reverent, not slanderers, temperate, faithful in all things. Let deacons be the husband of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.”

1 Timothy 3:11-12

Deacons are to be the husband of godly wives. Women who are neither engaged in loose talk nor idle chatter. Women who are faithful in all things. These women have a great reputation among the people as well.

It is interesting to note that the “husband of one wife” is repeated. Again this points to the fact that a Deacon can only be a man. But also note something else. His role in the family: ruling their children and household well. The husband is responsible to God for how the family functions. He is to be the spiritual leader, the protector, the educator, and the example. This is the type of family order that the Lord has established. The man is responsible for the family.

Note that the marital situation of the wife is NOT mentioned. Some have argued that the “likewise” applies to the marital status. If that were true then grammatically all of the other qualifications would have to apply as well, meaning husband, ruling, not greedy, etc. If that were true, then the deacon’s wife would have requirements than the Deacon himself.

Beloved, where the Scripture leaves something out, we should not try and add to it. God knew what He was doing when He gave us His Holy Word. We should seek to simply follow His word, and NOT change it.
