Thursday - April 23, 2020 - Blessing Our Pastors!

April 23, 2020

“The elders who are good leaders should be considered worthy of an ample honorarium, especially those who work hard at preaching and teaching. For the Scripture says: Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain, and, the worker is worthy of his wages."

I Timothy 5:17-18

How are we to take care of our Pastors? So many people want to treat the office of a Pastor like any other secular job. “Well, we pay them to do this or that…” Here the apostle makes it clear to the church that they are responsible for the care of their Pastors. Pastors are the ones that take care of the church body and preach and teach the Word of God. Many churches think they only have one Pastor and the rest of the staff are hired hands, not so in Paul’s assessment. If you are responsible for the teaching, preaching and taking care of the Church then you are a Pastor. Your gifts and responsibilities may be in various areas of service but ultimately you pastor those that God has given you charge of in your ministry. Pastoring has never been an 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. job. There are many times after 5 p.m. that I get called to minister, go to the hospital, run to the home of someone who’s lost a love one etc…… It’s availability 24 hours and 7 days a week all year long. An office of Pastor is a calling on someone’s life. Your gifts vary according to the individual.

Paul quotes Deuteronomy and states that Pastors are worthy of double honor and respect. They are to be rightfully taken care of in life. Their salaries should be how much can we bless them with not what’s the bottom line that we can get away with paying them. We should provide them enough to meet their needs and bless them. Pastors lead a very different life than the individual members of our churches. Bless them, encourage them and honor them as they serve faithfully week after week. Over the last 38 years of ministry, I’ve seen churches on both sides. Why not do above and beyond for the men that serve us in our churches? How can we share their load of ministry that will make it easier of a burden for them to bear? How can we stand in the gap and take the stress out of their lives? Pray for your Pastors and love them.

I know that Leawood Baptist Church has been so faithful in following Paul’s instructions here and blessing the men that have served them in this place. I thank God for each of you who make it a point to bless us and encourage us. Thank you for your Faithfulness!
