“Likewise deacons must be reverent, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy for money, holding the mystery of the faith with a pure conscience.” 1 Timothy 3:8-9

The term deacon means literally “servant.” There is the feminine form of the word ‘deaconess’ also found in Scripture. The church needs all of its members to serve the Lord faithfully. There has been in recent years some confusion about the difference between a servant and a deacon.

This passage talks about the “office” of a deacon, or the special type of service that a “deacon” performs. Paul is sharing with Timothy the qualities needed to serve the local church in this special capacity.

Just as a Pastor is to be a man, so too is the person who holds the office of a deacon. They must be one who honors the Lord in all that they do. Honest in their deals with others at all times. Men who are “not given to much wine,” alcohol has no control of them. A drunkard cannot be trusted. He should not be greedy. It’s the love of money that is the root of all kinds of evil. He should be a man who has demonstrated his understanding of Gospel of Jesus Christ.

A Deacon should have a desire to see people come to faith in Jesus Christ. Note the phrase “with a pure heart” these men want to share the love of Christ in all that they do. Their seek to serve the Lord by serving His Church and His people. They do not seek to please people as much as they seek to please the Lord.
