“But let these also first be tested; then let them serve as deacons, being found blameless.”

1 Timothy 3:10

Years ago while serving at another church, the Deacons came to me and said that it was the time of year that we began to look at electing “new” deacons. When we had the deacons meeting one of the men brought up the name of a man who came to church occasionally. I asked why would you think he was qualified to be a deacon? He replied, “Well, I thought that if we made him a Deacon he “might” start coming more.”

In another church some church members came to me wanting to know why a certain man had not been asked to serve as a Deacon. I responded< “I don’t know him that well.” They replied, “Well he is really well liked in the community and he is running for a political office.”

Beloved, a man who wants to be a Deacon must first demonstrate that he has a servants heart. One is not offered the position in hopes that they will become a better member. The church should be able to recognize that you already ARE SERVING the church. Nor is being a Deacon a popularity vote. Just because a man is well liked does NOT guarantee he will be a good servant of Christ. There are spiritual qualifications that a Deacon must first possess.

We should always remember to pray for our Deacons. To hold them up in Prayer as they seek to serve the Lord.
