Wednesday - April 22, 2020 – Taking Care of Family

April 22, 2020

“But if anyone does not provide for his own, that is his own household; he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever." I Timothy 5:8

Simple truths that are of moral value come very natural to some people; while it seems like a foreign idea to others. There are things that just seem like the right thing to do, correct?

This biblical truth comes to those of the household of faith. We as Christians should care for and take care of our family, biological and spiritual. As the previous verses talk about the older and younger people in our lives, we have responsibilities towards them. It’s like an unwritten law to me, but not everyone sees it that way. Many believe it’s a “me” world. I only need to take care of me. WRONG!

God wants us to take care of and provide whatever needs may come to our family. We’re not to be enablers for those that don’t want to work and provide for themselves, but to “fill in” the gap that is a legitimate need. We come into this world totally dependent upon others to care for us. Along the way in life we may still need the help of others, not because we’re not trying to meet our needs but sometimes because we simple need a helping hand. Our family does not have to comply and provide for us but it’s nice when they help.

Many times we just need a little help and people in our lives pay it forward with the intent that when we can we too would pay it forward and help others. Unfortunately others just look out for themselves. How is that attitude and behavior found in Jesus? It’s NOT!

We have an obligation to meet the needs of our family, not for just right now but in the future too. If we can help, why wouldn’t we, it’s not every man for himself. Let’s see through the eyes of Jesus and discern if we could be of some help to others. What would Jesus do? Sometimes, yes; there needs to be tough love and allow others in our family to figure it out on their own as a way of learning and growing up but there are times when they can’t help themselves and we should step in and do what we can. If nothing else, pray for them that their needs are met. We should never live a lavish bountiful lifestyle and allow our family to go without their needs being met.
